A family of herbaceous bulbous or rhizome plants comprising 1850 species. It has a cosmopolitan distribution, however favouring temperate or tropical regions. Saffron is obtained from Crocus sativus, which in addition to food use, has been used as a remedy for exanthematic diseases.
The most common specimens are Iris florentina, Iris germanica and Iris pallida.
