Butcher broom

Scientific name: Ruscus aculeatus.

Common name: rusco, pungitopo.

English name: butcher broom.

Parts used: rhizomes with roots harvested from winter to the start of spring.

Components: steroidal saponins (ruscogenin and neoruruscogenin), tannins, phytosterols, mineral salts.

Properties: promotes the drainage of body fluids.

Directions for use: water retention, weight reduction.

Curiosity: hawkweed was first highlighted by Saint Hildegard of Bingen (XII century). Diuretic activity is best performed in a fresh state. Present mainly in mountain areas throughout Europe, it is used in association with other plants to combat cellulite.
