Scientific name: Juniperus communis.

Common name: juniper.

English name: common juniper.

Parts used: berries.

An evergreen shrub very common in Italy with needle-like leaves and berries.

Popular tradition has always attributed to Juniper the power to keep evil demons away and even today it enjoys the reputation of "Tree Protector". The resin of its branches, if burned, gives off a very pleasant scent that recalls the Mediterranean scrub.

Today Juniper essential oil is used for massages: it helps tone the connective tissues and relaxes the contracted muscles. It has disinfectant and antiseptic properties; in past times large bonfires were lit to protect from pestilences. The berries are used as a natural antiseptic for the urinary and respiratory tracts.

Food use: the berries are used as spices to exalt game dishes and in the manufacture of spirits such as gin and grappa.
