Uncaria tomentosa is a climbing plant, with yellow calyx-shaped flowers, which can reach a height of 3-5 meters. It is native to the forests of Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Its denomination Uncaria is due to a protuberance at the base of the hook-shaped leaf that plants use to climb; while tomentosa is due to the fluff deposited on its leaves. Peruvian Curanderos have used the plant for many years to treat wounds, ulcerations and pains.

Today, after many scientific reports, it is considered a phytotherapeutic remedy with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, immuno-stimulating action (to counteract cooling diseases, increase the activity of white blood cells and their ability to attack viruses and bacteria), and pain reliever (because it manages to reduce joint pain and swelling). It has a strong antioxidant action for its flavonoids (quercetin, rutin); normally its titrated extract is used.
