Scientific name: Calendula officinalis L.

Common name: calendula, fiorrancio, callandria.

English name: calendula, marigold.

Parts used: flowers and leaves.

Components: essential oil, saponins, flavonoids, calendulin (mixture of carotenes and xanthophylls), mucilage.

An herbaceous, usually annual plant, spontaneous when uncultivated.

Properties: anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, emollient, soothing and moisturizing.

Suggested use: calendula ointment, thanks to emollient and antiseptic actions, improves skin hydration and is suitable for children's skin and dry, chapped skins. Calendula Infusions are indicated for the cleansing of sores, or as a mouthwash.

Curiosity: calendula flowers can be used in salads. They are also used as supplements for poultry to revive the color of the meat and egg yolks. In the summer, calendula blooms every month.

According to the German popular tradition, calendula flowers are macerated in pork sauce in a bain marie to obtain an effective ointment in the treatment of wounds.
